The organization was created to advance knowledge on the application of nuclear technology and science in aerospace. Nuclear-based applications and technologies are required to improve the current state of the art in aerospace engineering, design and operations, and to enhance safety, particularly for high-speed air travel. The areas of interest include, but are not restricted to, the creation of nuclear powered propulsion systems and multifunctional materials that protect electronic components and humans from radiation in space and the atmosphere, as well as nuclear power system radiation.

This week, the Department of Energy released new guidelines for converting coal-fired units to nuclear units. The idea has been gaining traction over recent years due to the United States' desire to reduce carbon emissions.

In a DOE study from 2022, it was found that there is potential for over 300 coal-to nuclear conversions in the United States. The process may be complex, but it will result in significant environmental benefits and grid reliability.
