But the South Korean capital has been evolving into an artistic mecca. Perrotin and Pace are planning to open new galleries in Seoul, which confirms the country's increasing appeal as a hub of the contemporary art industry. Emmanuel Perrotin is a risk-taker by nature. He was in fact the first Western art dealer in 2016 to open a branch in Seoul. He is now opening a second one in Seoul, six years after the first. This new space can be found in the trendy district of Gangnam. The exhibition will be dedicated to British-American Emma Webster. The opening date of the gallery coincides with both the inaugural edition of Frieze Seoul and the most recent edition of KIAF, the Korea International Art Fair. Parisian art dealers aren't alone in opening new sites in Seoul, to better serve Asian collectors. The American Pace Gallery is adding a ground-floor to its 789sqm space in Seoul, which it opened in 2017. Marc Glimcher explained to The Art Newspaper that the three-story gallery was a veritable arts complex. The gallery will include a cafe and bookstore where art enthusiasts can purchase Pace's publications. It is the second time that the American gallery has acted to establish its presence in the capital. The gallery had moved to its current location in Hannam, a central district, from a smaller space. In recent years, Western galleries like Thaddaeus, Ropac, Konig and Peres Projects, or Gladstone Gallery, have arrived in Seoul. Or even more recently as with Lehmann Maupin. This phenomenon shows the growth of South Korea's contemporary art market. The 2021 edition was a resounding hit, attracting 88,000 attendees, up from the 63,000 visitors five years earlier. That's not all.
